My mother broke her leg….

Recently my mother broke her leg walking out from work. The sun was in her eyes and she miscalculated how many steps there were. At 63 she is recovering slowly but she is expected to make a full recovery.

Upon reflection my mother said, “If I am going to break my leg I would rather do it while learning to ride a horse than by falling down some steps.”

I don’t know how practical this thinking is but it makes a great point. If something is going to happen to you it might as well happen to you while you are doing something you enjoy or doing something exciting or going after a great dreams.

This reminds me of a couple of quotes…

“I’d rather burn out than rust out.”

Or my buddy Rich Wilkins says, “I have concluded that no matter what you do, people are going to talk about you. If you do good they are going to talk about you. If you do bad they are going to talk about you. I’ve concluded that if they are going to talk about me, they are going to talk about me doing good.”

Keep dreaming my friends… it is what keeps us alive.

Pay a professional?

Robert Schuller has always said, “I never do anything I can hire a professional to do.” I admire this philosophy and it makes sense on some level. But I have found it impossible to pay for professional services every time I do something. This is especially true if you are young or starting a business. Here is the rule I use.

If you have the ability to earn more money per hour than you are paying someone else, then hire professional services. If you can do the work and save $35 - $50 an hour, then do the work yourself.

What is the rule you use?
