The bravest of us all

“Do not disregard the individuals, for they are the bravest of us all.” – Devon de Lena

Did you love the western TV shows with the lone maverick leading the charge for justice? Do you love the James Bond or Mission Impossible movies of the lone crusader at his or her best?

In business however we never like people who are too different. We say, “March to the beat of a different drummer,” but we really mean not too different. What can we learn from those who are out of the main stream?
  1. We can admire their passion and try to generate some of that passion for our projects.
  2. We can put them in charge of projects they can do by themselves and show off their talent by completing the job on time.
  3. The maverick usually looks at things differently; we can tap into this creative perspective so we can learn more about our work, customers, procedures etc.
  4. Mavericks can often fail, so we can learn how not to do something.
  5. Mavericks are often not afraid to fail and will try an unorthodox approach to a problem that no one else will do. Let them take the chance of failure with a new idea. To be fair, if it works you need to let them take the credit as well.

Mavericks can be hard to manage, but they can be assets to the organization…

Quote of the Day
"When we are writing, painting or composing, we are, during the time of creativity, freed from normal restrictions, and are opened to a wider world, where colors are brighter, sounds clearer and people more wondrously complex than we normally realize."
- Madeleine L'Engle
